Transport Tips

38% of journeys are <2miles. This would take < 30 mins to walk or <10mins to cycle
Electric bikes can typically give around 60 miles on one charge at a cost of 5-10p (cars cost ave £10 in fuel for 60M, 16p/M)
The community bus to Dartmouth, Totnes or Newton Abbot & can be fun meeting others
Car share – can save up to £1000 p.a. per member & be fun
Hitching - stand by Village Hall, Capton junction or The Sportsman’s. In Totnes -Kingsbridge Hill, Dartmouth Ship in Dock , sports centre or Sainsburys. If you see someone hitching do they look familiar? or judge if you’re happy to offer a lift- its a good feeling!
Car club – if you drive <6000 miles p.a. you could save up to £3500 p.a. One club car can replace 6-20 private cars.

Efficient driving

Size matters- go smaller if you can
Drive smoothly- avoid sudden acceleration and braking
Keep your car regularly serviced-check tyre pressures- underinflated tyres use more fuel
Take off any un-required roof bars
Remove unnecessary items from the car
Warm yourself on cold days by scraping off ice rather than leaving your car to idle
Go easy on air con and heaters
Avoid points on your licence and stick to the speed limit. You can use up to 25% more fuel driving at 80 rather than 70mph
Set yourself a challenge- note your average mpg and see if you can better it next month

Electric Cars

carbon neutral if you recharge using green supplier
recharging costs a fraction of petrol or diesel costs (3p/mile vs ave 16-20p/mile for petrol)
£3500 government grant cuts some of the pain if you buy new. Lease deals from £245pcm for 250mile range
Fewer things to go wrong- less/cheaper servicing
No road tax
No gearbox- easier and quieter to drive
Ranges vary but are getting longer. Many more cars coming on the market
